This painting was originally a gift to an old girlfriend. When we broke up, she returned the painting to me and I didn’t know what to do with it. I had the opportunity to travel to Los Angeles and witnessed spontaneously, the day of the dead. I saw a female character that looked like a red Virgin Mary and it inspired me to paint over my ex-girlfriend’s self-portrait. Now I feel like I have truly perfected this piece and I call it “Dead Relationship.”
